Liz Hingley

I am a photographer and anthropologist based in London. I was a founding member of the commission for Youth Social Enterprise and am a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. My international award winning photography intimately and sensitively documents people and places with my approach of ‘being with others’. Through diverse educational projects I use creativity as an alternative language of communication and education, to break down barriers and specifically encourage self-expression and deeper insight.

I graduated from Brighton University with a first BA Honors in Editorial Photography and went onto to complete a two-year scholarship with Fabrica research and communications department in Italy. In 2008 I curated a UK touring exhibition of my photographs with sound installations and led numerous workshops raising awareness for the homeless support communities of Emmaus.

I am currently completing an MSc in Social Anthropology at University College London and undertaking research in Paris in collaboration with Openvizor. This research concerns the complex issues surrounding multi faith inner city communities such as immigration, secularism and religious revival.

I havecwon numerous awards including the ‘Taylor Wessing’ National Portrait Gallery award 2009 and the Canon AFJ award 2010. I have exhibited throughout the UK, Europe and the USA and published my photographs and research internationally in arts and journalist publications and academic journals from the Sunday Times, Le Monde and Foto8 to Vision magazine in China. I am currently working on educational projects with Save the Children and regularly presents my work at Universities, galleries and conferences which reflects the importance of communication in my work.
