With the Sulukule Çocuk Sanat Atölyesi Hip-Hop Dance and Rap workshop (05/02/2012)

Sulukule Çocuk Sanat Atölyesi (Sulukule Children's Art Atelier)

Every weekend children between 10 and 17 years old get together for Hip-Hop dance and Rap workshops. This is part of a range of arts and cultural activity supported by a group of local and city organisations and volunteers, from teaching English and music composition to performance, music, dance, theatre, drawing, painting, film, precussion and a range of classical and modern instruments.

Sulukule Children's Art Atelier was established to keep the children and youth of Sulukule together with the goal of revitalizing the threatened Roma culture. The neighbourhood of Sulukule was demolished in 2009 by the Fatih municipality in Istanbul, in preparation for new housing developments.

Sulukule was the oldest settled Roma population in Europe and celebrated for its musicians and performers. The Sulukule Roma community were sent in their thousands away from the area, but most have returned to live around the demiloshed neighbourhood.

There is now strong awareness from within for a need to focus and develop a framework for the welfare and education of young people, and the teaching and celebration of Roma arts and culture.

Openvizor is in partnership with Sulukule Çocuk Sanat Atölyesi (Sulukule Children's Art Atelier), Sulukule Gönüllüleri (Sulukule Volunteers Association) and Sulukule Roman Kültürünü Geliştirme ve Dayanışma Derneği Başkanı (Sulukule Roma Cultural Development and Solidarity Association) to develop and build their vision and mission for the community as citizens of Sulukule, Istanbul and Turkey.
