All Silk Yards of the Benarasi Fashion Show

Bold, innovative chic bringing Eastern arts to the heart of Spitalfields

Paraa invite you to ‘All Silk Yards of the Benarasi’ fashion show, a dazzling showcase of the brilliant Benarasi and Mirpur Silk fabrics in a glamorous, empowering and unconventional event on 24 November 2011 in the majestic and historic setting of Christ Church, Spitalfields.

This catwalk event focuses on the vibrant hand woven silk produced by the Urduspeaking minority community in Bangladesh. Collaborating with a set of international fashion designers from the UK, India, Germany and Bangladesh, the event aims to create a platform highlighting both the striking versatility of the fabric, and the future of the people who produce them.

Our international designers – using the stunning silk of the Benaroshi Polli Market of the Mirpur district in Dhaka as their inspiration – bring artistry and integrity to their collections, challenging out-dated perceptions. Each of our eight designers was tasked with reinterpreting the exquisite silk material, each producing a distinctive collection that will be presented as part of the show.

The organisers Paraa are a London-based charitable organisation, whose first project is to create a library for the Urdu-speaking minority community, which until recently held refugee status and continue to live in sub-standard conditions. This community also produces the Benarasi, the centre piece of the show, and the aim is to highlight the fabric to a new audience ensuring long term sustainability. The vision is to create a centre of learning which will become a repository of cultural heritage.

Paraa are working with Dr Lynne Hammond of London College of Fashion, internationally renowned catwalk producer Deborah Britz and a professional design team to prepare a visual feast. The show will be hosted by a special guest, with music, entertainment, light refreshments and intimate after party, providing all the ingredients for an extraordinary event.
