The Road to Basilique

Dir: Sunara Begum / 2010 / UK / 68 mins / Documentary Feature Film

‘The Road to Basilique’ is an intimate portrait of the composer Tunde Jegede and his piece ‘Le Fleuve Niger’ that brings together musicians from various music traditions. It is a meeting point at the cross roads between the old world and the new. Through their shared collective voice this film seeks to unravel the truth of cultural evolution and change, and we see how these dying traditions, connected by the River Niger, are given new life.

Filmed over a six-month period it follows the creative process and the journey to the historic concert at the Basilique in Paris featuring the legendary Malian artists Oumou Sangare, Toumani Diabate and Kasse Mady Diabate. The film gives a window into the artistic world of a composer at work and we see how music emerges out of the lived experience. ‘The Road to Basilique’ features some of the most evocative music that transcends genres and is Africa’s answer to the Buena Vista Social Club.
